Results of the Scrappies project

The aim of the Scrappies project was to support primary school teachers with practical, creative, and sustainability-focused tools. To this end, three main intellectual outputs were created: the Scrappies Handbook, the Scrappies Toolkit, and a teacher training programme, all helping to implement sustainability education in practice.

The Scrappies Handbook provides a theoretical introduction to developing creativity and using recycled materials in schools. It presents international good practices and compares how the educational systems of Finland, Poland, and Hungary approach sustainability. The handbook also includes recommendations for policymakers, school leaders, and other stakeholders on how to integrate sustainability into education.

The Scrappies Toolkit, the collection of “Snaps”, contains inspiring, open-ended mini-scenarios that enable pupils to experiment, think creatively, and learn through play – using recycled materials. Teachers become companions and supporters in the learning process, forming deeper connections with pupils and turning teaching into a more enjoyable, interdisciplinary experience. The toolkit also includes communication tools (poster, leaflet, presentation) to involve parents and local communities and help organize scrap collection.

The teacher training programme was developed in two formats: a five-day intensive course and a shorter half- or one-day workshop. Both formats aim to support teachers in adopting a sustainable educational approach and using the Snaps in everyday teaching. The programme was accredited in Hungary, and internally validated by partner institutions in Poland and Finland.

To deepen the project’s impact, six international webinars, a final international conference, and local stakeholder groups were organized in all three partner countries. Evaluation showed that teachers gained knowledge and confidence in teaching sustainability, while students became more engaged in the learning process.

The key message of the Scrappies project is that sustainability is not only about content – it can be practiced through creative, joyful, and low-cost teaching methods as well.

The Snaps

Our program for preschool and elementary school teachers features the SNAP-collection, a key product developed within the Scrappies project, now available for everyday use. These mini-lesson plans provide ideas and games on various sustainability topics, enriching teaching resources and offering creative afternoon activities. We've developed a total of 30 topics. You can browse them here, but can be downloaded in one as well.
